Racing Ahead 24hr, Gunstock NH - 2007 : Jim Christiansen, John Compton, John Davison, and myself met up at Gunstock Resort in Gilford, NH for the 2007 Racing Ahead 24 hour adventure race. We placed 1st in our division, 4th overall in a field with some *very* tight competition!! That's despite two flat tires, a bent rear dérailleur, and some serious issues with chafing. (The last four hours on foot were excruciating for me. You have noo idea. From now on, vaseline is my friend.) Our navigation all race was pretty spot-on - in the night section alone we jumped from 10th to 4th place mostly because of our unusual route choice (hitting the toughest CP before sunset meant more total ascent but saved a lot of time) and very good night-time nav skills. Jim & I have raced together quite a few times, but this was our first time with John - he's a pretty amazing racer and navigator, so I hope we can race again.

Some statistics: 22 hours, 53 minutes total time and 11321 calories burned. 3:43 in canoe, 15 miles. 6:31 on bikes, 49.4miles and ascending 4480 feet. 12:33 on foot, ~17 miles, ~4700ft ascent. 18 teams started the race. 15 teams crossed the finish line. 7 teams got all 25 checkpoints. 3 teams dropped out or were not permitted to continue.

Eco Endurance Aventure 2006 : This was my big race for the year - a three day stage race in Quebec about three hours northeast of Montreal. There was an international field of competitors, including teams from Italy, Ireland, France, Brazil, the US, Canada, and Quebec. ;) The winning team, Sole, is consistently ranked in the top five teams in the world, so to be racing on the same course as them is pretty damn impressive if I do say so. (Never mind that their overall time of 27 hours was almost exactly half of our 54. Man, they're fast!)

The course was as beautiful as it was brutal - lots of uphill, lots of distance covered (250k total, give or take a little), lots of (believe it or not) fun to be had. Fun, especially in hindsight. For over 14 hours a day, three days straight we: asked ourselves "why?" many times, drank about 9 litres of water, ate several pounds of sandwiches, clif bars, gu shots, and fruit, and burned about 7000 calories a day. That's a whole lot of energy in and out!

Chris, Drew, Jim and myself raced, John and Michelle ran support. Great race everyone - its funny how much you learn about what you're capable of every time you race. I definitely feel like we performed well as a team, and I'm personally very happy with how it all worked out.

Same time next year?

More info here.

(I'll be making topo maps for each of the days, and in theory I can create elevation profiles, at least for a few of the legs. I'll stick them all here when I've got 'em done...)

BTW - as of 9/1 I've added the pictures taken by the Endurance Aventure folks to the end of the gallery.
